Some Thoughts of a New Pro-Democracy Activist After Participating in the Commemorative Parade of the 1989 June Fourth Massacre for the First Time
I only learned about the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre after I was in the United States. I received a complete set of education in the Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”) system from elementary school to university in China, so I didn't even know about the Tiananmen Square Massacre before I came to the United States. It was as if the Tiananmen Square Massacre had never existed in China’s history. Before I came to the United States, I had never heard or seen any reports about the Tiananmen Square Massacre. This is the consistent style of the Chinese Communist Party. As long as it is negative news about the CCP, the CCP will block it and try to eliminate it from the long river of history forever. Thus, China has some very strange, embarrassing, and incomprehensible things: such as the Great Firewall, which prevents domestic people from seeing negative news reported by foreign media without going over the wall; such as the purpose of killing in order to silence and prevent people from expressing dissenting opinions; such as the large-scale labor reform facilities in Xinjiang are used to assimilate ethnic minorities of different beliefs....
It was only after I came to the United States that I saw clearly and realized the nature of the CCP’s vicious totalitarian regime and Xi Jinping’s dictatorship. I have always had fantasies and expectations for China, and like many people, I can't let go of the homesickness and warm and beautiful memories of my birthplace, although it is very difficult in reality. However, after I read one and another story about other people make me realize that I should not hold any hope and illusions about China being ruled by the CCP anymore. Because there is no hope at all. Too many of those who returned to China after studying overseas in the early days did not end up well: they were imprisoned, reformed through labor, and endlessly tortured to make their lives worse than pigs and dogs. Moreover, many of those scholars were charged with trumped-up or false charges, and their short lives were wasted by the CCP for no reason. What a pity! It is also sad that their hope for the CCP prompted them to make such a choice that they regret for life time.
This June 4th demonstration and protest is the first large-scale demonstration and protest since the pandemic. We marched from 32nd Street to the pier opposite the Chinese Consulate and held a protest on the pier. The Chairman of the China Democracy Party New York National Committee (“CDP”) assigned me to apply for permits for parades and rallies for this event. I spent a lot of time and made a lot of phone calls asking what licenses were needed and how to apply for them. One of the most troublesome is the permission to use the pier. I even attended a hearing with 5 people for this permit. In the end, the five of them decided to approve after an internal discussion within a week and let us use their pier for free. After the use permit of the pier was obtained, I had to go to the Tenth Precinct in person to apply for an amplified sound permit. Since the pier use permit has been approved, the Tenth Precinct quickly approved our amplified sound permit. The parade permit was submitted online, and while there is no application fee, it is so detailed that it took me hours to fill out the form and submit it to the NYPD. Finally, the parade application was approved. Because the parade permit was approved, during the parade, many policemen stopped vehicles at the intersection along the road, allowing our parade to pass through in an orderly and safe manner. There were also two plainclothes policemen accompanying our parade, Andy and Bert. Thanks so much for being so friendly NYPD! After the parade arrived at the pier, they were replaced by people from the Tenth Precinct. Among them, Jerry was a plainclothes policeman standing by for my protest. Thanks again for being so friendly NYPD!
Although I have not personally experienced the June 4th incident in Tiananmen Square, and I may not be able to experience the passion and tears of the survivors of the pro-democracy movement, I can understand people's determination to pursue their freedom and democracy and their Dissatisfaction with the CCP. Since I prepared for the parade and also participated in this parade, I naturally thought about some issues.
What I can't understand is, after the Tiananmen Square Massacre of innocent students, why did the CCP's system continue as a one-party dictatorship without reform? And now most people in China are brainwashed into thinking that there is nothing wrong with the CCP’s autocracy. Because many people simply don't understand that there is another system that exists. They have no way of judging and knowing that the CCP's dictatorship is the source of all the CCP's viciousness! The dictatorship of the CCP has made it impossible for the CCP to be competed and supervised and checked and balanced. A political party is composed of people. If a person can have unlimited power, and these rights are not restricted and balanced, then this person will do everything and violate the interests of others recklessly. The CCP has unlimited rights, and there is no rival party to restrict and balance, so those who live under this totalitarian dictatorship system can never be human beings, but just tools and puppets of the political party. So China will never be able to truly put people first. Everyone must know that the police in the CCP can never be as friendly as the NYPD. CCP officials and police generally believe that ordinary people are not worthy of respect! Therefore, illegally robbing property, and illegally beating and arresting people are common incidents! In their eyes, ordinary people are as cheap as grass, if they want your life, you have to give your life; if they want your money, you have to give it! No law can protect you, because they are the law in their eyes!
In contrast, after the bloodshed, Taiwan adopted a two-party system, and achieved democratic elections and a series of real democratic measures! Why did China not change after June Fourth? After the June 4th incident calmed down, the CCP revived and even spread its claws on the world stage, and it continues to grow stronger. By shifting people's attention to economic freedom, people have given up their political demands. Many people will not desperately want democracy and freedom after they are no longer hungry! So the CCP is very evil and very cunning!
Therefore, I think that as a new pro-democracy activist, who joined the team last year, with others, I need to uphold the June Fourth spirit and continue to fight against the CCP! We hope that one day China can achieve institutional democracy, instead of the CCP stepping down and another dictatorial party like the CCP coming up! This is the last thing we want to see! We want democracy and freedom! We must be firm and never forget June Fourth Massacre!
