The Foundation of Freedom: From Individuals to Nations

Author: Hao Jiangtao

Introduction

Freedom has always been one of the most cherished values in human society. However, the understanding of freedom varies greatly. One perspective argues that individuals should sacrifice their personal freedom in exchange for national freedom; another emphasizes that only when individuals fight for their own freedom can a nation truly be free. The former may seem noble but is actually a fallacy. Rather than achieving national freedom, it results in greater oppression and lack of freedom. The latter, however, is the correct path toward a truly free and equal society. A nation built by slaves can never be truly free!

Sacrificing Individual Freedom Does Not Lead to National Freedom

The idea that "sacrificing individual freedom can bring national freedom" may sound like a noble sacrifice, but it contains a serious logical contradiction. National freedom is not an abstract concept—it is the collective freedom of countless individuals. If individual freedom is stripped away, the nation becomes nothing more than an empty shell of enslavement and cannot be considered truly free.

Historical Case 1: Nazi Germany—The Disaster of Extreme Nationalism

In 20th-century Germany, the Nazi regime, under the slogan of "national interests above all," demanded that all citizens abandon their personal freedoms to fully support the state’s expansion and rule. Freedom of speech, political rights, economic freedom, and even basic personal liberties were all taken away, and people were forced into unconditional obedience. However, this so-called "national freedom" ultimately led to Germany’s destruction. The fascist dictatorship not only deprived Germans of their basic rights but also dragged the entire nation into war, costing tens of millions of lives. The sacrifice of individual freedom did not bring national freedom; instead, it brought catastrophe.

Historical Case 2: Soviet Totalitarianism—Depriving Individual Rights in the Name of the Collective

Under Stalin’s rule, the Soviet Union adopted a similar ideology, emphasizing that individuals must submit to national interests. The government, under the pretext of national security, economic development, and social stability, deprived citizens of their freedoms. During the Great Purge, tens of thousands of intellectuals and political dissidents were arrested or even executed, and the basic freedoms of ordinary people were severely restricted. However, this did not lead to national prosperity. Instead, it filled Soviet society with fear and oppression, causing economic stagnation and limited technological innovation. Ultimately, the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s.

Contemporary Example: North Korea—Total Loss of Individual Freedom Leading to Isolation and Poverty

Modern North Korea is an extreme example of "sacrificing individual freedom for national freedom." The government demands absolute obedience from its people, restricting basic freedoms such as speech, movement, and employment choices. Although the regime claims that these sacrifices are necessary for national security and independence, North Korea remains one of the most closed-off and impoverished countries in the world. Its citizens lack basic rights, the economy has long been stagnant, and the country is isolated from the international community. This clearly demonstrates that sacrificing individual freedom does not lead to national freedom but rather results in extremism and decline.

Part II: Individual Freedom Is the Foundation of National Freedom

In contrast, the correct view of freedom should be: "Fighting for your own freedom is fighting for your nation’s freedom." A truly free nation must be built upon the foundation of individual liberty. Both historical and contemporary examples show that a nation’s prosperity and freedom stem from its citizens’ ability to think independently and exercise their personal rights.

Historical Case 1: The American War of Independence—Individual Freedom Leading to National Freedom

The American War of Independence is a prime example. In the 18th century, people in the North American colonies suffered under British colonial rule, with their personal rights severely infringed upon. In response, they began to fight for their individual freedoms and resist British despotism. These efforts for personal freedom eventually coalesced into a movement for national independence, leading to the founding of the United States and the creation of its Constitution. The U.S. Constitution established a democratic system that protects individual freedoms, ensuring that citizens’ rights are not violated by the government. It was the pursuit of personal freedom that created a free nation.

Historical Case 2: The French Revolution—Individual Rights Driving National Democracy

The French Revolution is another example of individual freedom fostering national freedom. In the late 18th century, the French people lived under feudal rule, where the aristocracy enjoyed privileges while ordinary citizens had no political rights. In response to such injustice, the people revolted and overthrew the monarchy, establishing a modern democratic system based on liberty, equality, and fraternity. It was the elevation of individual rights that transformed France from a feudal state into a democratic nation.

Contemporary Example: Nordic Countries—High Individual Freedom Leading to National Prosperity

Modern Nordic countries, such as Sweden, Norway, and Finland, are among the most developed in terms of individual freedoms. These nations protect freedom of speech, political rights, and economic freedoms while maintaining some of the highest living standards and social stability in the world. This proves that safeguarding individual freedoms does not weaken a nation. Instead, it strengthens national competitiveness and cohesion, making the country truly free.

Building a Free Nation Requires Free Citizens

Freedom is not a gift; it is something that must be fought for. Those who advocate for sacrificing individual freedom for national freedom are actually promoting enslavement rather than constructing a free country. True national freedom must be built on the foundation of individual liberty.

The freedom of a nation depends on whether its citizens possess independent thought and personal autonomy. If individuals within a society cannot think freely, make their own choices, or create independently, then no matter how powerful the country may seem, it remains fundamentally closed and rigid. Conversely, when citizens can think independently and express themselves freely, the political system becomes more democratic, economic development becomes more innovative, and society as a whole becomes more vibrant.

A free nation begins with free individuals. Every person should strive for their own freedom and cultivate their individuality. Only then can we truly build a nation that is free, equal, and prosperous.

Conclusion

Looking back at history, we can clearly see that the idea of "sacrificing individual freedom for national freedom" is untenable. It only leads to oppression and unfreedom at the national level. The principle that "fighting for individual freedom is fighting for national freedom" is the only approach that aligns with the logic of freedom’s development. Only when every citizen enjoys freedom can a nation truly be free.

Let us remember: Freedom is not a privilege granted by the state to individuals; it is the foundation upon which individuals fight for national freedom. A nation of slaves can never build a free and equal society!
