Haitao Ru: Thoughts on the 30th Anniversary of 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre
A few days ago, I attended the 30th anniversary commemoration of 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in Manhattan, and the experience left a profound impact on me.
On the day of the event, participants, holding banners, gathered together to mourn those who lost their lives in the pursuit of democracy and freedom on June 4, 1989. Standing among these people, I felt a strong sense of resonance and sorrow.
The event began with witnesses and survivors of the June 4th incident sharing their stories. Their accounts were deeply moving, recounting tales of despair and hope, courage and fear, which touched everyone present. Listening to these experiences, I felt as though I had traveled back to that era of passion and turmoil, feeling the unwavering conviction to pursue ideals at any cost.
Following this, the host provided a detailed introduction to the background, process, and aftermath of the June 4th event. The tragic scenes and the indomitable spirit of resistance he described once again struck a chord with my heart. I saw that, although 30 years had passed, that history had not been forgotten. It remains deeply etched in the hearts of everyone who values democracy and freedom.
The commemoration also invited several scholars to speak. They analyzed the historical significance of the June 4th incident and its contemporary relevance from different perspectives. Especially in today's globalized world, the struggle for freedom and democracy continues in various parts of the world. Their speeches reminded us that history is not a forgotten past but a living reality that impacts our present and future.
At the end of the event, it suddenly began to rain lightly. People stood together in respectful silence, starting a moment of silence. The raindrops fell on my umbrella, making a slight pattering sound, as if whispering the untold stories of the past. The silence in the rain was filled with mourning for the deceased, dissatisfaction with the present, and hope for the future. In this solemn moment, I felt an intangible force, a call from the depths of history, urging us to continue forward.
This 30th-anniversary commemoration of June 4th not only made me more aware of that history but also made me realize that as the next generation, we have the responsibility to remember the past, reflect on it, and draw strength from it to work towards building a more just and free society. I hope that through such commemorative events, more people can learn the truth, pay attention to human rights, and contribute to democracy and justice in the China.
