On June 4th 1989, Deng Xiaoping, hardline leader of the Communist Party, sent troops with assault rifles and tanks to suppress the protests led by students who called for government accountability, freedom of press, freedom of speech, and the restoration of workers’ control over industry. Every June, tens of thousands participate in protests and vigils to express their discontents over the rotting and corrupt state of the Chinese government and to call on Chinese authorities to account for those killed, detained, or missing in connection with the events surrounding June 4th, 1989. This year, the DPC organized and took part in the following gatherings to mark the 27th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown:
- 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on May 31st, in front of the China Consulate, Vigil for those killed, detained, or missing in the June 4th Incident
- 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2nd, Sheraton Hotel (Flushing), Seminar of Tiananmen Square Massacre
- 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 2nd, Times Square, Gatherings to mark the 27th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown
- 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 3rd, in front of the China Consulate, Protests for activists who are detained and prosecuted
- 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on June 3rd, DPC Headquarter, Debate with officers of the China Consulate about current political issues in China
- 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., United Nation, Times Square, China Consulate, and Union Square, Performance-art protests by artist Xue Mingde and members of the DPC
